BACKSTORY
Some stories simply don't have happy endings- but that doesn't mean you can't make the best of what life gives you, and that's exactly what young Hero did.
Springtime had come and the beta of Dark Thorn Pack was pacing outside of the nursery. His mate was about to have his first litter of pups. Though he was behind on his duties, Cecil would be there for Alex and his offspring. The sun set and young Hero was born- all by herself with no siblings yet she was perfectly healthy- as was her mother. They made a beautiful family. Her parents (More specifically, Cecil) decided to name her Hero as it was an uncommon yet strong and powerful name. Hero grew up with her wonderful parents, friends, and family and she grew exceptionally close to her cousin, Pippins. But no good things could come with their flaws...
Cecil was a marvelous beta and leader. But he had been covering up something for a long time- the fact that the pack's alpha male, Jack, was hardly an alpha male at all. Cecil did all of Jack's work plus his own beta duties, but Cecil had so much loyalty to Jack he'd never make this fact known. Eventually the stress came crashing down on the poor male- and he slowed down on his duties. Nonetheless, Jack seemed to realize that he had to start performing his own duties and this sent a little spark of insanity into his head.
One fateful morning- wolves were on their regular duties, when alpha Jack immediately pinned and killed one of the pregnant pupsitters within the pack, and began to attack the other wolves of his pack. Cecil had to jump in and fight his best friend and superior- as much as it hurt. Jack had to be banished, and Cecil took his place as alpha. Poor Hero witnessed all of these tragic events.
However, Cecil realized that he wanted another wolf to be alpha. He loved Alex and his subordinate role- so he gave it to a young and fearless female called Cora. Cora took over and vowed that she would train Hero to be a true female and blossom into a proper alpha eventually. Cecil took this deal and joined his mate in the regular ranks den.
Time went on. Hero grew up with the wise words of Cora and her guidance and she grew into a fine wolf and a beautiful one at that. Cora taught her many lessons and she drilled one in particular into her head- to never take a mate, as males take your rank. Hero took this lesson well and never really allowed herself to fall in love- until one time, it took ahold of her.
A new member joined the pack by the name of Iago. Iago was a charming wolf and was very talented at fighting and hunting. Hero couldn't help but fall for this wonderful male and the two fell deeply in love with one another, until they were official mates. Cora never approved of the union, for she saw bad energy that lingered with it. Hero did not listen to her mentor, but then, it was too late. On a patrol, Cora was hit by a car in her guts and had passed away in the arms (or paws) of her beloved successor and friend. It was hard enough to see that she was gone- but the good news was, her mother had informed her that she was expecting pups and that Hero would be a sister, so this cheered her right up.
Cecil had taken Iago on a hunting patrol along with some other wolves one day when they were ambushed by a bear whom had been targetting Iago. Cecil jumped in front of him and took blow after blow from the bear in order to save his daughters' mate, but Cecil did not make it out alive to witness his new pups being born. The news took a toll on the whole pack- especially Alex and Hero, but Hero needed to stay positive for her mother. Soon though, four new pups joined the family- called Angel, Night, Quince, and Tucker, all names that Cecil loved. These pups kept Alex busy and made her think less of Cecil, but the sadness lingered, and Hero had nothing to cheer her up. Except, pupsitting! She loved watching over her siblings, especially with Iago. The two would cuddle and roll around with her four siblings and then nap together while Alex went to meetings or small patrols. It all worked out quite well until another fateful day came.
Iago and Hero were once again pupsitting while Alex went on a hunting patrol. Her pups were a week old, but she was interested in returning to some of her duties- especially her favorite duty, hunting. But it was a dangerous job- especially one to do alone. While she was out, she had been kicked down by a bull elk and had been stabbed by its hooves and horns. She was going to die- before she let out a howl for her daughter. Hero left Iago with the pups to see her mother who was dead- and she had to be strong. Hero immediately notified the pack of it and went to see the pups- but they were left alone in the den. No Iago. She exited the den to see him flirting with Ri, a female who had a mate already. Iago explained that his only love was to be Ri, and that he was leaving her. Hero immediately freaked out over this- her parents and mate were gone.
Of course it was no surprise- without milk, the pups slowly passed away. They tried everything to keep them alive- but Hero was alone in this crazy and cruel world. Perhaps not though...When she was at her worst, her cousin, Pippins, was there for her. She comforted her and the two were instantly close. The two left their birthpack together to move on with their lives- and here Hero is today, leading a strong pack with a goddess forever watching her.
